§ 6-91. Establishment and organization.

  • (a)

    A board of adjustment is hereby established. Regular members of the board of adjustment shall be appointed by the mayor and approved by a majority of the board of alderman. The board of adjustment shall consist of five regular members, all of whom shall be residents of the city at least 21 years of age who hold no other office of the city. The term of office of regular members shall be five years, except the membership of the first board shall be one for one year; one for two years; one for three years; one for four years; and one for five years. Thereafter, members shall serve terms of five years each. Vacancies shall be filed for the unexpired term only. Up to three alternate members, having the same qualifications as a regular member, shall be appointed by the mayor and approved by the board of alderman to serve in the absence of or the disqualification of a regular member. Alternate members shall serve a term of five years. Regular and alternate members shall be removable for cause by majority vote of the mayor, who shall be entitled to vote on such removal, and the board of alderman, upon filing of written charges and after public hearing. The board of adjustment as now existing under any previous ordinances shall continue as the board of adjustment under this article according to their previous terms of appointment.
