§ 2-126. Acting president.

  • (a)

    Following the installation of reelected or newly elected aldermen at the first meeting of the board of aldermen which follows the annual election of aldermen, the board of aldermen, by a majority of all the members of the board, shall elect one of their own number as acting president of the board of aldermen. The acting president of the board of aldermen shall serve in that capacity for a period of one year or until his successor as acting president is elected or until his term of office as an alderman has terminated.

    (b)

    The acting president of the board of aldermen shall perform the duties of the mayor, with all the rights, privileges, powers and jurisdiction of the mayor, in the event of any vacancy in the office of mayor, or in the event of the incapacitation, disqualification or temporary absence of the mayor.

    (c)

    In the event both the mayor and acting president determined in accordance with this section are absent from any regularly scheduled or special meeting of the board of aldermen, the members of the board of aldermen present and constituting a quorum shall select the next senior aldermen present to conduct that meeting of the board. Seniority shall be determined by consecutive terms served as alderman, or by the highest total votes cast for the senior alderman at the last election for alderman if seniority cannot be determined merely by consecutive terms. Meetings of the board of aldermen shall be conducted in accordance with the then current edition of Robert's Rules of Order (Newly Revised).
